From five kids and one board to a camp that keeps growing
Three years ago, the chess camp at the Yes We Can Community Center started with the simplest possible setup: five curious kids, a handful of borrowed chessboards, and the belief that chess could teach far more than a game — focus, patience, sportsmanship, and the confidence that comes from thinking a few moves ahead.
Word spread fast. Kids who came for day care stayed for chess. Parents saw their children planning, problem-solving, and winning (and losing) with grace. Each summer, the camp grew.
Today, we welcome over 30 campers and a dedicated team of 4 counselors — and it's still completely free for every family that uses the center's summer day care. Because a great first move shouldn't depend on what a family can afford.
Camp launches with 5 students and a passion for the game. Small group, big ideas.
Enrollment grows as campers bring friends. Structured lessons and counselors join the program.
Over 30 campers, 4 counselors, and a ChessKid partnership giving every student free tools to keep learning.
